For Your Home

Conserving Water inside your home

  • Check for faucet and toilet leaks throughout the house. Put a little food coloring into the tank. If the color trickles into the bowl, there is a leak- usually the flapper.
  • When you leave home for a trip, turn off the water, so that no one can accidentally turn on an outside faucet or water line burst. Also turn off the hot water heater.
  • A water softener uses approximately 80 gallons of water for regeneration. A metered softener will only regenerate when needed.
  • Take short showers, not baths. Limit showers to 5 minutes or less.
  • Install flow restrictors on individual water fixtures like shower heads and faucets.
  • Install water-saving toilets like the Gerber Viper.

Garden and Lawn

  • When planting a garden, group vegetables needing more water so you can apply water most efficiently.
  • Mulch shrubs and small trees to retain moisture in the soil for a longer time.
  • Pull out weeds to eliminate competition for water.
  • When building or remodeling, plan your landscape and garden to minimize water needs.
  • Water thoroughly but less frequently. Doing so promotes a deeper grass root system.
  • "Trickle" or "drip" techniques use 25 to 50 percent less water than standard hoses or sprinklers.
  • Water your lawn and garden between 9 p.m. and 9 a.m. to avoid sun evaporation.
  • Check hoses, faucets and water devices periodically for leaks and malfunctions.
  • Allow your lawn to temporarily brown out, or go dormant, when drought conditions persist. Usually this will not hurt a healthy, established lawn because the roots continue to live and are ready to send forth new shoots when conditions improve.

Electrical & Home Comfort

  • Each degree you turn down the heat saves 3 percent of heating costs, while each degree you raise the temperature of your air conditioner saves 3-4 percent of cooling costs.
  • Have a high efficiency air conditioner installed by Becker & Becker. Each seer point higher reduces energy usage by approx. 7.5%. For example, going from 9 SEER to 13 SEER, the power consumption is reduced by approximately 30%. This can result in savings up to $300. per year depending on usage & electrical rates.
  • Save even more with a Carrier Hybrid Heat & Air System.
  • Change light bulbs from traditional incandescent to compact fluorescent or LED light bulbs.
  • A furnace that uses a DC motor - such as the Carrier Variable Speed Furnace - will save money on both heating and air conditioning since it only consumes 80 watts of power instead of the normal 800 watts.

General Tips

Check Filter
Check the air filter in your furnace or fan coil each month.
Remove Debris
Keep grass clippings, leaves, shrubbery and debris away from your outdoor unit.
Inspect Ventilation
Inspect your furnace's combustion area and vent system before each heating season.
Clean Humidifier
Clean your humidifier and change pad at the beginning of every heating season.
Be sure your home is adequately insulated. Adding insulation to attic areas is usually pretty easy.
Check the seals around windows, doors, electrical outlets or any other potential sources for escaping air.
Programmable Thermostat
You can program winter/summer temperatures and can save up to 15% on heating bills.

If your air conditioner doesn't come on automatically:

  1. Be sure the thermostat is set to "cool" and below the current temperature.
  2. Check for a tripped breaker or blown fuse.
  3. Make sure the furnace power switch and outdoor condenser's power switch are turned on.
  4. If the unit still won't come on, call Becker & Becker for a service appointment.

Preventing Kitchen Drain Clogs

  • Kitchen sink drains clog most often because of a buildup of grease that traps food particles.
  • Hair and soap are often at fault in bathroom drains.
  • Don't pour grease down the kitchen sink.
  • Don't wash coffee grounds down the sink. Throw them out.
  • Be sparing with chemical cleaners, some caustic chemicals can corrode metal pipes.
  • Keep the sewer pipes from the house free of tree roots that may invade them. As a preventative measure use Root-X.
